Book, CD, and DVD Clubs
You've probably encountered advertisements for some of these clubs in a magazine or on the Internet. Many of these ads sound like they are almost too good to be true 12 CD's for a penny each, 6 DVD's for 6 dollars, 4 books for free! Joining a club like this can seem like a great way to add to your audio, video, or book collection. However, in many cases, the introductory offer is a way to lure consumers into a prenotification negative option plan. Under such a plan, consumers implicitly agree to receive more merchandise automatically unless they actively reject each offer as it comes. You must opt out of each offer for additional merchandise!
Play it Safe
-
Companies are required to present information about their plans clearly and conspicuously.
-
Read and understand the terms and conditions of the plan!
-
Be prepared to send off rejection forms regularly if you don't wish to continue receiving merchandise.
-
The introductory offer looks like a good deal, but you may be required to buy a certain amount of additional merchandise at full price (minimum purchase obligation). You can't cancel your membership until you have satisfied this obligation.
-
Do the math required to compare the club's prices and shipping charges against other sellers.
